What are the best David Austin® roses? The useful answer begins with another question: best for what? A rose that makes a wonderful arch is not the same choice as a rose for a patio pot. The flower you want beside a path may be different from the one you want to bring indoors.

This is our purpose-led edit of the ten varieties in Cloverdale’s collection, based on their described habits and the breeder’s recommended uses. These are editorial recommendations, not a sales ranking or a claim about national popularity. Each pick earns its place by what it can bring to your garden.

Best David Austin® roses for cutting

Start with Boscobel®, Princess Alexandra of Kent™ and Olivia Rose Austin®. The breeder lists cutting among the uses for all three. Boscobel® brings coral-pink warmth and rosette form; Princess Alexandra of Kent™ offers large, deeply cupped pink flowers; Olivia Rose Austin® supplies softer pink blooms for a quieter palette.

These are garden roses for home-grown arrangements, not a promise of florist-style stem length or vase life. Weather, cutting stage and conditioning affect how well any bloom holds. Choose a variety you also want to enjoy on the plant.

Best picks for a large container

Consider Gertrude Jekyll®, Olivia Rose Austin® or Princess Alexandra of Kent™. The breeder lists pots and containers for these shrub varieties. Gertrude Jekyll® is especially appealing when strong Old Rose scent is part of the patio experience you want.

Container suitability does not mean a small pot will do. Match a generous container to the rose’s mature growth, provide drainage, and expect watering and feeding to need more attention than in open ground. If space is tight, compare listed dimensions rather than judging size from a flower photograph.

Best for an arch, doorway or wall

Choose between our two climbing forms: Wollerton Old Hall® and Strawberry Hill®. The breeder lists Wollerton Old Hall® for a larger wall or fence and a large arch. Its pale flowers and strong myrrh fragrance suit a romantic vertical planting.

Strawberry Hill® is described as a shorter climber, with uses including a doorway, pillar, obelisk or standard arch. Its pink flowers offer a different color story. Both need support and training; roses do not attach themselves to a structure like self-clinging vines.

Best for an upright border or rose hedge

Look at Queen of Sweden® and Olivia Rose Austin®. The breeder lists borders and rose hedges for both. Queen of Sweden® has an upright habit and upward-facing cups that create a particularly ordered impression. Olivia Rose Austin® has a balanced shrub shape that works in a softer planting.

For more expansive, arching growth and yellow flowers, consider Golden Celebration® in a generous border. It is a different kind of presence: leave room for its shape rather than asking it to behave like a narrow upright shrub.

Best when fragrance is the priority

Gertrude Jekyll® is the Old Rose starting point; Wollerton Old Hall® is a myrrh-led alternative. Munstead Wood® combines strong Old Rose fragrance with fruity notes and rich crimson color. Princess Alexandra of Kent™ adds Tea and developing citrus notes to the shortlist.

No scent ranking is universal. Temperature, flower age and your own sense of smell all matter. Choose the fragrance family that appeals to you, then check that the plant fits the site.

Best for a pale, romantic planting

Desdemona® deserves a look. Its peach-pink buds open to flowers that read as white with a soft blush. Desdemona® offers a gentle contrast to richer pinks or the crimson of Munstead Wood®. Here the recommendation is about color and described shrub form, not a claim that it outperforms every other rose.

The best shortlist leaves you with a plant you can accommodate and a flower you genuinely want to see again. Pick the job first; let the beauty make the final decision.
