My rose collection, ranked by fragrance

Fragrance is the hardest thing to photograph and the easiest thing to remember. Here is every rose currently in the collection, ranked from the loudest perfume to the quietest, with the notes each variety is known for in the breeder trials and test garden.

A note before the list: scent is weather. A rose that fills the path on a warm, still morning can go almost silent by a windy afternoon, and a young plant rarely smells like its mature self. Treat the ranking as a starting point, not a verdict. You can browse the garden roses here.

Intense

1. Yves Piaget® — Bright citrus opening into ripe pink rose, peony-like richness, and a thread of warm spice. One of the most decorated fragrance roses released.

2. Parfuma® Earth Angel — Apple, lemon, champagne, and sweet rose. The fruit note is unmistakable and carries well across the garden.

Strong

3. Martha Stewart™ — Lemon verbena, bergamot, and honeysuckle. Crisp and citrusy rather than old-rose; it reads almost like a perfume top note.

4. Bolero® — Traditional rose layered with lemon verbena and tropical fruit. Carries surprisingly far for a compact floribunda.

5. Princesse Charlene de Monaco® — Sweet fruit, peach and apricot, and a soft powdery floral underneath. Best on warm mornings.

6. Rouge Royale® — Ripe berries, raspberry, citrus, and a classic old-rose base. Award-winning fragrance to match the deep red bloom.

7. Queen of Elegance® — Classic old-rose scent, full and unfussy. The kind of fragrance people picture when they say "rose."

8. Sweet Mademoiselle™ — Sweet fruit and a fresh, peachy-pink floral. Pretty rather than heavy.

Moderate

9. Parfuma® Bliss — Apricot and vanilla over a light pink floral. Gentle for a Parfuma®, but consistent and pleasant.

10. Uptown Girl® — Fruity with citrus, peach, and apricot. The scent mirrors the blush color almost exactly.

11. Forever Amber® — A warm, amber-toned fruity scent. Subtle, best close to the bloom.

12. Easy Does It® — Fruity with mango, orange, and peach. Cheerful, like the color.

Light to mild

13. Fashion Forward® — Sweet citrus and fresh pink floral. Still a new introduction, so I'm watching how it deepens as the plants mature.

14. All Dressed Up® — Tea rose with a clean note of fresh-cut apple. Light, but distinctive.

15. Sunbelt® Plum Perfect — Soft raspberry and cassis. The scent is quiet; the color and disease resistance are the headline.

16. Koko Loko® — Light floral with a mild tea note. The mocha-to-lavender color shift is what this rose is really for.

17. Celestial Nights® — Mild and fruity. Pleasant up close, not a carrier across the garden.

18. Love Song™ — Light, fruity, and gentle. The mauve color is the main event.
